Why does sprint do this with phones that had...

...been paid off? Anyways, here's the story. I bought my phone from craigslist used obviously. So i activated it ( they put me on a contract i wasn't aware of ). Anyways, i couldn't afford the payments anymore due to other financial burdens. So i tried to cancel but said i had a contract with them. They said i had to pay more money. So i told them, i didn't authorize no contract and i wasn't going to pay. Anyways, so i decide to give my phone to my brother since i won't need it anymore. It's quite a nice phone (treo 650). So my brother went today to activate the phone. And the guy there said to him that he couldn't activate it. That it's under contract and it can't be activated unless the previous owner (me) pays off the balance. This doesn't seem right to me, isn't this ilegal? I bought the phone clean and clear. It should be able to have the previous owners info deleted for the new owner right? Anybody know of anything about this?If i sell the phone for cash, will the person i sell it to be able to activate it? If not then sprint pretty much stiffed you on a $300 phone. Making it useless.
