unless you can unlock it's an AT&T phone only for at least 5 years.

Right now AT&T has the exclusive contract. Also, the i-Phone is created to work only on GSM networks, so until Apple develops a phone that will work with CDMA (the type of system used by Alltel, Verizon Wireless and others like that), AT&T and T-Mobile are the only US carriers who could use it.Long story short, don't look for other carriers to sell the i-Phone for at least 2 years.
