download speeds

while not expecting DSL speeds with my blackberry 8700C tethered to a laptop with AT&T service, the speed is torturously slow. I've been told by others that's because EDGE used by GSM carriers is much slower than EVDO used by CDMA carriers (laptop tethering as oppossed to laptop connect cards/modems). Would appreciate response to my question, and experiences of others. Would I be better off with EVDO? I'm currently out of contract with AT&T. Except for the extremely slow tethering speed, I'm otherwise happy with AT&T.

Edge is very slow when comparing it to something like EVDO. In the simplest terms it is like a Modem vs Cable or DSL...
