DOES cell phone spying software really work?

I am curious, do these cell spying programs really work? I want to monitor the text messages on my other phone that my son has but I dont know anything about technology these days. I know it is an LG 260, is this a windows mobile or a symbian phone? I know it doesnt have a sims card, but has bluetooth...all help greatly appreciated! I know they say these programs are illegal but the phone is mone and in my name, I just got it for my son who is still a minor.
