Moto RAZR V3 Reliability & Reception

I have four GSM RAZR V3's on Cingular, everyone has had great RF reception and voice tone, as well as being completely reliable.

I bought a Silver RAZR when they first came out, used it for a year (the longest I've every used just one phone). Then Motorola released the Black V3, so I bought one just to have a different color. It too is a great phone. I like how easy a RAZR slips into a pocket as I don't wear a phone on my belt. Also, I use and iPod and digital camera, so those items are not something I want in a phone.

Finally when I saw the other RAZR versions coming out , I decided to buy one more plain V3 before they were discontinued. I used it for a month or so, then put it back in the box as a spare.

Then I became focused on trying other phones, just for fun & something different. I searched for some forums to read about the latest in phones. Imagine my surprize when I began reading how bad RAZR's were? Then an even more interesting find, was reading the UK forums where RAZR's are much higher rated than on the US forums, very telling. If I had only one, then I would say I was lucky, but I have four!

Recently I got a new SLVR L2 for free from Cingular. My favorite aspect of this phone is no camera, no media player, just a phone. It's only 9.5mm thick and superlight and small. Another Moto with great reception and voice tone.

So I'm happy with my GSM Moto phones.

That's great to hear!

For me, it's been sorta mixed. I found that the RAZR V3 gets slightly worse reception than my previous phone (Motorola V60g), which in turn got slightly worse reception than its previous phone (Nokia 3390). But I'd imagine it really depends where you are, as reception depends heavily on the distance to the nearest tower, any obsticles in between you and the tower, the weather and environmental conditions, etc... in addition to the phone's own RF performance.

That doesn't mean the RAZR V3 is a BAD phone or anything... I still like the RAZR V3! But I think it was a little hyped up and was a little disappointed when I first got it. However, I've learned to live with its shortcomings (more than just weaker reception in my location) and it's fine for what I use it for.

PROS (IMO):
- Style/Fashion (still gets compliments even though it's 2 years old)
- Thinness (GREAT for slipping in my pocket)
- Quadband (something that stands out among cheap(er) phones today)
- Great Speakerphone (one of the best I've heard)
- Packs Lots of Features In Such A Thin Phone (especially compared to other phones 2 years ago)
- BIG & Bright Inner Screen (for a phone this size)
- VERY Customizable (just like all Motos)
- Lots of Colors (if you like being colorful)
- Lots of (Cheap) Accessories (OEM and non-OEM)
- It's Cheap (at least NOW it is... sometimes FREE with a contract)

CONS (IMO):
- RF Performance Weak(er) (like I said above, depends what phone you're comparing it to, and in what location)
- Battery Life (not bad, but not great like other Motos... ESPECIALLY when using GPRS or Bluetooth!)
- GPRS (NO EDGE!!!)
- Earpiece Too Quiet (without SEEM Editting to fix it)
- Phone Too Thin To Hold Comfortably (either on your shoulder or open/dial with 1 hand if you have big hands)
- Small/Hard To Read Outer Screen (especially when in daylight)
- Slow(er) Moto Interface (although this depends on personal preference)
- Old(er) Technology (which doesn't bother me that much since I primarily use my phone for talking anyway)
- Subpar Camera Quality (even for VGA... although this doesn't bother me too much since I rarely use it anyway)
- Less Durable (I put this factor in here because a noticable fraction of users mention this, but I personally feel its durability is OK... for a phone this THIN!)

My V3 from Cingy worked well for me for almost two years, and the person I sold it to is still using it. I had no issues, though I know a few people that swear up and down that they are the worst phones ever made. CDMA motos on the other hand, I've had nothing but problems with.

I'm wondering now that you brought up the CDMA motos, if that contributes to the problem reports? Then like you mentioned there are some people that say they are the worst ever. Very interesting. This begs the question, is it because people are dropping them (easy to do) or? Just a curiosity on my part, as I'm not married to any brand, just try to find the phones that meet my needs. I like that the RAZR is aluminum instead of plastic, not that I have anything against plastic, it's just nice to have choices. Another aspect of my L2 to report, is that it's the only phone I've ever had that does not squeek when gripped, just like the RAZRs.

I'm enjoying the feedback from other members here.

Cheers...

I'm not sure....I believe a lot of it is personal preference. I.E. people getting swept up by the hype, getting it, and then realizing that it isn't the phone for them. One of my buddies tried out two razr's that were defective before going to a Samsung. I attribute that case to bad luck, but I don't think that he was the only one with such bad luck...BTW, isn't the L2 a tri-band phone?

Great Question..... Congratulations!

You know your phones quite well. You are right, - in the rest of the world this is indeed a Tri-Band phone. However the one I got from Cingular is a Quad-Band.

Interestingly enough, they are the only carrier that offers this phone and it's a promo that they've had for about 4 months. One of my favorite pastimes is practicing my negotiating skills. With a kill em with kindness attitude and a win/win objective. So just for the fun of it, I called Cingular to see if I could get the free deal without extending my contract or any other changes. After about 30 minutes I got the deal done. It's important to note that they only sell these on the web. They do not carry them in the stores. When I went to place the order I called as the only way I could get it on the web was to add another line which I did not want. So I called just to see what I could accomplish.

I was attracted to this phone because of the great reviews in got in the UK. Also because it has the best keyboard of the entire SLVR series. Even the CSTN display is very nice. Usually I always buy fully loaded phones and as you know they have TFT displays. This display is amazing, as is the overall build quality. With no camera it's really slim and light, so it fits in the breast pocket of my suit perfectly. It has a scratch resistant glass display and if I did'nt know any better it looks like a really expensive phone. The color and finish is called Diamond Dust, and it's a very nice texture which makes holding the phone very secure as you have good grip.

I would highly suggest this to those who would like a nice regular phone, with terrific call quality and RF reception. The other surprize is the battery life, it's so long that I cannot even estimate it as I have simply not kept track.

Yes, I do my homework...I was toying with the idea of a second line dedicated to texting, quick conversations...etc... looked into it, but I'm not sure I would like to text a lot with the small keypad....

Ironically I just added a second line today for that very reason. I use texting mainly to communicate with my wife. So because it does have a small keypad I have setup an array of quick notes (templates) to choose from, which serves my needs just fine as I probably only send 4 text messages per day on this phone. While the keypad is small, the key response, travel and tactile experience is outstanding. Yet I would not want to do a lot of texting.
Whereas on my RAZR texting is really fast, easy and one can do a lot without problem. So the texting issue is about the only trade off.

Hopefully this additional feedback is helpful to you.

Cheers

Thank you. I was thinking krzr, but no....similar sized keypad....but it does look great...I text a little more often, to various people, usually out of state, so I was thinking of another razr, but I had a silver V3 for almost two years.... so I want something different. The color of the phone, camera quality, and mp3 player aren't important, but I am leaning for the stylish and slim. I have the fusic for it's functionality, I think I deserve a nice little toy.

Yes, wanting something different from the V3 is what set me off on an "extended search" for something else to try. The result was rather surprizing for me, as I have purchased several other phones and nothing comes close to the RAZR for great reception, a nice big keypad, and the slim flat profile when closed.

What are your thoughts in terms of other phones that you might be interesting in?

Well, the fusic is my primary phone. Its capabilities, reception and battery life makes it hard to replace. I have found unlocked chocolates and Razr maxxs, but they are european tri-band phones (albeit the maxx has 3g compatible with Cingy) that lack gsm 850... Even through I'm leaning towards using t-mob anyways.....Its nice to be able to use it how I want to...

Sounds like a nice phone. Did you buy it unlocked? What carrier are you using it on? How long have you had it?
Pros?
Cons?

Thanks

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, there is no GSM equivalent. It is made exclusively for Sprint. I have had it for around ten months, and can't find anything I like so much as to replace it. It is the only phone on the market now with an fm transmitter. Take a peek.... LG Fusic / LX-550 Specs & Features (Phone Scoop)

I clicked the link and checked out your phone.... Wow... very impressive. I really like the looks and features of this phone. Everything about it is very compelling. I especially like how the front of the flip (closed) is layed out. Now I understand why you are so happy with this phone. For me it would definitely a keeper.

Just as a funny aside, It's killing me that I cannot buy a Product(RED) RAZR. My favorite color is RED and I just love this RED RAZR, however I'm not with Sprint and since it does not have a sim card (at least to my knowledge) I cannot buy one, unlock it and use it with my Cingular Service.
Very disappointing - Motorola! Oh well, life goes on....ha...ha....

Cheers.....:w00t:
