Can you tell me about Nextel?

I'll be switching to Nextel before long, since my building is wired exclusively for them. Is the instant-talk walkie-talkie feature useful? Also, what network technology do they use? Is it GSM, or something else. How does the integration with Sprint work? Are they separate networks? Also, I'm curious to hear about experiences in general, service/coverage/etc. Thanks."How is a buildling wired for a cell phone?" I'm a med student at Shands UF, in a huge tertiary care hospital in Gainesville. The building blocks all phone signal, so they have an exclusive deal with Verizon to wire the pagers, and Nextel to wire for cell phones.

Nextel uses IDEN, something that they and only SouthernLinc use in the states. IDEN has the distinction of being able to make calls when the phone shows one bar (in some cases no bars). As of yet, the DC (aka DirectConnect, aka walkie-talkie) is unmatched by any other PTT technology. If you and another Nextel user are in a 6-mile area with no coverage, you can still use DC. The range of the off-network DC varies with location, obstructions, etc. As far as coverage, not the best but not the worst. It is in any major city (at least the ones I would consider going to) and along most highways. Depending where you are, one might have issues on a road trip, but the people that just fly from city to city have noticed no loss in coverage. Sprint is starting to phase out IDEN-only phones, now in favor of hybrid phones that primarily use Sprints CDMA network for voice and Nextels IDEN network for DC and voice where there is no Sprint coverage. IDEN will be shut off by 2010 or 2012, depending on who you believe. Certain building materials block signals, so they have to find ways to provide communication to valuable clients. I'm not even going to try to answer how your building is set up because that is not something that I am familiar with. i love their walkie talkie. its like sprints ready link. i did have it til i switched phones. the fusic doesnt have it and thats the only bad thing. i heard that nextel is pretty cool carrier though. some buddies at work have nextel and they never complained.

It destroys readylink...but other than the lack of PTT, the Fusic is hands down one of the best phones for Sprint. I'm going to have a hard time finding a suitable successor...
