I had a computer monitor do that once, it shot orange flames out of the bottom and sides and smoked up the house, and it stank up the house for DAYS. It was tossed out that same day, some guy picked it up from the curb, I hope he didn't burn his house down trying to get it to work. Never had any inclination the monitor was going to burst into flames either, it worked fine the day before.

This happened to me once with a Nokia Communicator. Suddenly, it got really hot, the plastic casing started melting, and a really nasty smelling smoke came out of it. So I turned it off- if I had left it on, it may well have burst in to flames.
I assumed that it was due to a faulty operational amplifier on the circuit board or a short circuit. When I switched it back on, it worked fine, but was rather disfigured due to having partly melted. Then the next day, it was stolen by some gypsy kids who swiped it from right in front of me- I was sitting in an internet café, concentrating on an annoying email. I only noticed it had gone a few minutes after they had left. I hope whoever ended up with it found that he couldn't get it to work properly. |
