Well how often do you get tickets? It may be worth it in the long run, because it will save you money

It may be worth it, but I still don't have the money!

If I sell my old one, downgrade phones, sell ipod.... nah, not worth it....

Most of these pay for ticket things have lots and lots of limitations. A popular one is that it's only if you're going less than 15 mph over the speed limit. In most cases you won't get a ticket anyway......

Truth to be told I am always afraid that a cop will see the detector and give me a ticket even though he otherwise would not have.

There's a simple solution to this problem: Just do the speed limit. Oh wait... Is that 5-mile backup behind me just because I'm going the speed limit?

Going the speed limit can oftentimes be dangerous....

On the Garden State Parkway - a wide, multi lane highway with no trucks, the speed limit is either 65 mph or 55 mph. It should really be like 75.

Most people do quite a bit over the speed limit. If you are doing the speed limit - and certainly if you do less than the speed limit - it is very easy for someone to come up quickly behind you..... hopefully will see you before.....

Even my law-abiding DH admits that doing 55 on his commute to work is risking life and limb. And yes, when we're doing the speed limit, we definitely stay in the far right lane, always alert and ready to jump into the shoulder quickly for the moron doing 85 in a 55 in the slow lane!

If you are willing to spend $400+, why not get the Valentine One? It is one of the BEST radar/laser detectors around IMO. Logic Mode significantly cuts down on the number of false alarms too, (although the GPS in the Escort probably will be "better" at this).

I did quite a bit of research about the Escort and Valentine, it turns out (imo) that the experts are divided, and they are both superb units. I went with the cheaper one.

Yeah, someone who does 85 in a 55 in the slow land is a moron, and is risking lives, and deserved a ticket.

But what about the guy doing 75 in a 55 in the fast lane? Does he also deserve a ticket? What about it it's in middle of the day (i.e. good visibility) not too many cars, and he's in a car that handles well?

Does it make sense that there is the same speed limit for someone driving a 1980 Sedan De Ville and someone driving a 2007 Maxima?

Speed limits are just a way of making money. Tickets should be given to reckless and/or dangerous drivers. And that depends on many factors, primarily those I that mentioned already.

I agree that speeding tickets are simply an invisible tax. However, the speed limit is a legally instituted law. If enough people cared, there are mechanisms in place to change laws. The other problem with speed limits and traffic laws in general is that some people simply like to "push" the limits of whatever the law says. If the speed limit is 55, they go 60. If it's 85, they go 90.

Personally, I think people who don't make full utilization of the thing on their steering wheel labeled CRUISE CONTROL are the real menaces on the highway. You know the ones... They'll be doing 55 one minute and 75 the next, then back to 40! My first law (if I were President and had executive powers) would be to make the use of cruise control mandatory on dry highways on sunny days. My second law would be to order the construction of a double-decker highway system. The top lanes would be constructed above our existing infrastructure as bridges. Semi-trucks would drive on the bottom, cars and pickups on the top.

When are you announcing your candidacy?

Yeah those people who don't use cruise are really annoying. First they come barreling by you than they are in front of you going slow, you move left to pass them, a minute later they are flying by you again.... I hate those people. Almost as much as I the people that hog the left lane and make everyone pass them on the right......

What you wrote about people pushing the limits, that's part of the reason why they don't raise the SL, cause people will just go even faster. Imo that's ridiculous. If the SL should be 80 on a particular highway, than make it 75. And ticker the guy who goes over 80. Do that for a few weeks and people will know that it's called a limit for a reason.
