Why does sprint do this with phones that had...

...been paid off? Anyways, here's the story. I bought my phone from craigslist used obviously. So i activated it ( they put me on a contract i wasn't aware of ). Anyways, i couldn't afford the payments anymore due to other financial burdens. So i tried to cancel but said i had a contract with them. They said i had to pay more money. So i told them, i didn't authorize no contract and i wasn't going to pay. Anyways, so i decide to give my phone to my brother since i won't need it anymore. It's quite a nice phone (treo 650). So my brother went today to activate the phone. And the guy there said to him that he couldn't activate it. That it's under contract and it can't be activated unless the previous owner (me) pays off the balance. This doesn't seem right to me, isn't this ilegal? I bought the phone clean and clear. It should be able to have the previous owners info deleted for the new owner right? Anybody know of anything about this?If i sell the phone for cash, will the person i sell it to be able to activate it? If not then sprint pretty much stiffed you on a $300 phone. Making it useless.

this is why i dont sign contracts much anymore, i got a pre-paid cell service that goes month to month for almost the same price as contract phone, they just deduct amount from my checking account & i can up-grade anytime, or skip a month 2 for any reason, works for me for almost 4 yrs now, no cancelation fees & all that'.

Sprint can refuse to activate the phone until you pay off your bill. It's in the contract, which you would've gotten a copy of in the mail after you activated service.

Correct. They do this so people that bought the phone and what not, they dont give you another chance to re-activate the phone unless you pay your dues. It's just how they work... I'm curious to know how you didn't know Sprint would put you on a contract? Most major cellular phone companies require a contract upon activation. Other pre-paid services don't and Cricket don't.
